Major Nutrients

Nutrition is the science of food and its impact on our current and future health.

It's every bit true but hard to see that our bodies are made from the nutrients we extract from foods. The nutritional content of what we eat determines the composition of our cell membranes, bone marrow & blood and has influence on powerful hormones & enzymes we need to survive, grow and perform optimally.

Our bodies are literally manufactured out of the food we consume. Once you believe the statement “you are what you eat”, it makes you think twice about what you feed your body every day.

The condition of your body today is the sum total of all the food choices you’ve made in the past. How long and how well you live depends on how you “fuel” your brain, heart, hormones, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and bones. Human cells, tissues, and organs function optimally if they are provided what they need when they need.

There are some major nutrients necessary by our body for growth, maintenance, energy and overall functioning:

1)  Macronutrients: Nutrients that provide calories and energy. Since “macro” means large, macronutrients are nutrients needed in large amounts measured in ounces and grams. There are three macronutrients:

2)  Micronutrients: Nutrients that do not provide any significant amount of calories. Since “micro” means small, micronutrients are nutrients our body needs in small amounts measured in milligrams and micrograms. There are two micronutrients:

3)  Others: Nutrients which are of extreme importance and do not contain any calories:

  • Proteins
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals & Trace Minerals
  • Water
  • Fiber
